The Florida Attractions Association (FAA) proudly recognized three outstanding individuals during its 2026 Annual Conference in Tampa for their exceptional contributions to Florida's attractions industry and to the association.

Cindy Stavely Receives Outstanding Attraction Member of the Year

The FAA honored Cindy Stavely of the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum with the 2026 Outstanding Attraction Member of the Year Award.

For decades, Stavely has been a respected leader in Florida's attractions industry, serving guests with excellence while mentoring colleagues and helping shape the next generation of industry professionals. Known by many as the "Queen of St. Augustine Attractions," she has built an extraordinary career across several of the city's premier attractions and has generously shared her knowledge and experience with countless others.

Her impact on the FAA has been equally significant through her service on the Board of Directors, her support of industry programs and events, and her role as an instructor in the FAA Leadership Academy. Her dedication, leadership, and friendship have left a lasting mark on both the association and the industry she serves.

Kristina Wilson Recognized as Associate Member of the Year

The 2026 Associate Member of the Year Award was presented to Kristina Wilson, founder of KEW Legal.

Wilson has distinguished herself through her unwavering commitment to supporting Florida's attractions industry beyond the traditional expectations of her profession. Through education, guidance, and proactive leadership, she has helped FAA members navigate complex legal issues, reduce risk, and create safer environments for guests and employees.

Her willingness to share her expertise and serve as a trusted advisor has made her a valued partner to attractions throughout Florida. Wilson's dedication to strengthening and protecting the industry exemplifies the spirit of service and professionalism that defines the award.

John Penney Honored with Chairman's Award

FAA Chairman Samantha Palmer presented the 2026 Chairman's Award to John Penney, founder of BlackDog Advertising.

Penney was recognized for his extraordinary leadership and commitment to the association through his work reimagining and rebuilding the FAA's member website, FloridaAttractions.org. What began as a technical project became a transformative effort to strengthen member engagement, improve communications, and enhance the association's ability to serve its members.

Contributing countless hours of creative energy, professional expertise, and strategic vision, Penney's work has helped position the FAA for future growth and success. His dedication reflects a deep passion for the association, its members, and Florida's attractions industry.

    Celebrating Service and Leadership

"The success of the Florida Attractions Association is built on the talent, generosity, and dedication of individuals like Cindy, Kristina, and John," said 2025-26 FAA Chairman Samantha Palmer. "Each has made a lasting impact on our association and our industry through their leadership, service, and commitment to helping others succeed. We are proud to recognize their remarkable contributions."

The awards were presented during the Florida Attractions Association's 2026 Annual Conference, held May 31–June 3 in Tampa, Florida.

A highlight of the Florida Attractions Association's 2026 Annual Conference was the opportunity for attendees to experience two of Tampa's premier attractions during a pair of memorable OnStage evening events.

On Monday evening, conference attendees gathered at ZooTampa at Lowry Park for an exclusive experience at one of the nation's most acclaimed zoological parks. Recognized for its leadership in wildlife conservation, animal care, and immersive guest experiences, ZooTampa provided a remarkable setting for networking, fellowship, and industry connection.

Guests enjoyed time exploring the zoo and were among the first to experience ZooTampa's new Manatee Critical Care Center. The facility highlights the zoo's nationally recognized role in rescuing, rehabilitating, and caring for Florida's beloved manatees. The evening also included a buffet dinner, beverages, and countless opportunities for attendees to reconnect with colleagues and build new relationships while enjoying one of Florida's premier attractions.

The conference concluded Tuesday evening with a special celebration at The Florida Aquarium. Consistently ranked among the nation's leading aquariums, The Florida Aquarium is renowned for its innovative exhibits, marine conservation initiatives, and exceptional guest experiences.

Attendees explored the aquarium's exhibits and enjoyed a first look at The Tide Pool, the aquarium's newest exhibit inspired by the rugged beauty and marine life of the Pacific Northwest. Against the backdrop of one of Tampa's most iconic attractions, guests shared dinner, drinks, and conversation while celebrating another successful Annual Conference.

Reflecting on the two evenings, FAA Chairman Samantha Palmer noted, "One of the greatest strengths of the Florida Attractions Association is the opportunity to learn from one another while building meaningful relationships. Our evenings at ZooTampa and The Florida Aquarium showcased two extraordinary attractions, but more importantly, they brought our members together to celebrate the innovation, hospitality, and passion that define Florida's attractions industry. These experiences remind us why our industry is so special and why our association continues to thrive."

Together, these two OnStage events demonstrated the very best of Florida's attractions industry—world-class guest experiences, innovation, conservation leadership, and the spirit of collaboration that brings FAA members together. The FAA extends its sincere appreciation to the teams at ZooTampa and The Florida Aquarium for their generous hospitality and for creating unforgettable experiences for our conference attendees.

The Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation (FASF) continued its mission of developing the next generation of industry leaders during the Florida Attractions Association's 2026 Annual Conference, awarding five scholarships and four professional development grants that bring the Foundation's total investment in future leaders to more than $142,000 since its inception.

Founded eleven years ago through the vision and generosity of FAA members, the Foundation was created to support students and emerging professionals pursuing careers in Florida's attractions and tourism industry. In recent years, the Foundation expanded its impact by adding professional development grants for FAA member organizations, further strengthening the industry's workforce pipeline.

"This Foundation exists because our members believe in giving back, lifting others up, and creating opportunities for the people who make our industry exceptional," said Jennifer Berthiaume, Chairman of the Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation. "By investing in students and professionals today, we are helping ensure that Florida's attractions industry remains resilient, innovative, and globally recognized for generations to come."

    Celebrating Future Leaders

The Foundation awarded five $2,000 scholarships to outstanding students and emerging professionals whose academic achievements, leadership, and commitment to the tourism industry distinguished them among a competitive field of applicants.

Among this year's recipients was Samantha Cuson, a Marine Science student at Eckerd College and volunteer diver with The Florida Aquarium. Through research with NOAA, marine ecology studies, and public science education initiatives, Cuson has demonstrated a passion for conservation and environmental stewardship. She received the Barbara Kenney Honorary Scholarship, established through the generosity of Barbara Kenney, whose seed funding helped launch the Foundation eleven years ago.

The Arthur Hertz Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Isabella Arosemena, an emerging leader whose work spans environmental science, climate resilience, tourism, and entrepreneurship. A graduate of the University of Miami and team member at Sawgrass Recreation Park, Arosemena has distinguished herself through academic excellence and a commitment to protecting Florida's natural resources.

Julie Grossman, a student at the University of Central Florida Rosen College of Hospitality Management and a Walt Disney World attractions cast member, received the Joe Ryan Memorial Scholarship. Grossman is pursuing a degree in Theme Park and Attraction Management and aspires to build a career creating memorable guest experiences within the attractions industry.

Two additional scholarships were awarded to graduate students already making meaningful contributions within the tourism industry. Sophie Duguid, a graduate student at UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management, has developed leadership experience with SeaWorld Orlando, Universal Studios Florida, and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. Olivia Turpening, Community Relations Manager for Visit Sarasota County, is pursuing a master's degree while serving as a leader in tourism communications, community engagement, and destination advocacy.

    Supporting Professional Growth

In addition to scholarships, the Foundation awarded four professional development grants to FAA member organizations seeking to strengthen employee development, leadership training, and organizational excellence.

Flamingo Gardens received funding to develop a comprehensive Hospitality Excellence Program focused on guest service, leadership development, mentoring, and career advancement opportunities for frontline employees.

Miami Children's Museum will utilize grant funding to support participation in nationally recognized museum leadership and education conferences, enhancing programming, guest engagement, and staff development initiatives.

The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art received support for participation in the Disney Institute's Leadership Excellence program, helping strengthen leadership skills, communication, accessibility, and guest-centered service throughout the organization.

ZooTampa at Lowry Park was awarded funding to complete the International Facilities Management Association's Facilities Management Professional Certification program, supporting leadership development, operational efficiency, and long-term facility planning.

    Building a Stronger Future

As the Foundation enters its second decade, its impact continues to grow. What began as a vision to support aspiring professionals has evolved into a meaningful investment in both the future workforce and the ongoing development of industry leaders.

The Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation's commitment to scholarships and professional development reflects the industry's shared belief that investing in people is one of the most important ways to ensure the continued success of Florida's attractions industry.

Applications for the Foundation's next round of scholarships and professional development grants will open in February 2027.

While OSHA considers implementing Rules for workplace heat management, we recommend each members review their policies regarding protecting their employees and guests from the effects of our world-famous Florida sunshine this summer season.

You’re already familiar with the Heat Index.  You may consider using the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) which is a comprehensive measure of heat stress that, unlike the Heat Index, accounts for direct sunlight, wind speed, and humidity to determine safe conditions for work or exercise.

In the absence of regulation, heat safety is an operational discipline, not just a compliance issue.

     1) Heat Management Plan

    Written Heat Illness Prevention Plan

Designates a responsible supervisor per shift/zone

Defines heat triggers (e.g., heat index thresholds) and required actions

    Includes emergency response protocol

Treat heat like weather operations (similar to lightning or hurricanes)

    2) Hydration Standards

Unlimited access to potable water (no cost, no barriers)

Water stations placed within close proximity to work areas

Encouragement to drink ~8 oz every 15–20 minutes in high heat

    3) Shade & Cooling Access

    Permanent or temporary shade structures

    Access to air-conditioned recovery areas

    Use of:

    Cooling tents

    Fans / misting stations

Cooling towels or vests (for certain roles)

    4) Rest & Recovery Protocols

Structured cool-down breaks based on heat index

    Rotational staffing to allow:

    Short, frequent recovery periods

    Adjusted schedules:

    Earlier start times

    Reduced mid-day exposure when possible

    5) Job Rotation & Workload Management

    Rotate employees between:

High-exposure roles (e.g., parking, ride ops in sun)

    Lower-exposure roles (indoor or shaded)

    Reduces cumulative heat strain

    6) Employee Training & Awareness

Train all frontline staff to recognize:

    Early signs: Dizziness, fatigue, headache

Severe symptoms: Confusion, fainting, heat stroke

    Include: “Buddy system” awareness

Clear instruction: “Stop work and report symptoms immediately”

    7) Emergency Response Protocol

    Immediate escalation steps:

    Move to shade/cooling

    Hydrate

    Call medical/EMS if needed

Supervisors trained to treat heat stroke as a medical emergency

    8) Heat Monitoring & Triggers

Use of “wet bulb globe temperature” or heat index (not just temperature)

    Defined action thresholds, for example:

    90–95°F → increase hydration + awareness

    95–100°F → add breaks + rotation

    100°F+ → enhanced protocols / operational adjustments

    9) Uniform & PPE Adjustments

    Lightweight, breathable fabrics

Hats, sunscreen, sunglasses encouraged or provided

Adjustments for roles requiring heavier PPE

    10) Acclimatization Program

    Gradual ramp-up for:

    New hires

    Employees returning after time off

    11) Culture & Communication

    Reinforce:

    “Safety over speed” mindset

    Remove stigma around:

    Taking breaks

    Reporting symptoms

    Leadership messaging is critical

    12) Guest-Facing Alignment

    Provide:

    Guest hydration stations

    Shade in queues

    Heat advisories
