Resolved Thursday, November 16, 2016 - The Florida Attractions Association Board of Directors concurs and adopts the position of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) regarding TripAdvisor’s recent policy change regarding animal interaction programs:
While we recognize TripAdvisor's recent policy change is intended to promote animal welfare, based on the information we've seen we believe the company's recent policy decision that appears to oppose certain animal interaction programs is misguided and counterproductive. These interaction programs educate and inspire people in a way no other programs can. They build a one-of-a-kind, human-animal bond and give the public a greater appreciation, respect, and passionate desire to care for animals and their environments around the world.
High-quality, compassionate care for the animals is a critical foundation for the responsible interaction programs presented by qualified experts in accredited and regulated zoological settings. People should not be precluded from participating in these activities. In fact, doing so, could negatively impact animal welfare globally. We urge TripAdvisor officials to take the time to tour, explore, and better understand these experiences. If they do, we believe they will reconsider their decision.
